Attn: All 1-82 FA veterans! Our battalion, now part of 1st Brigade, 1st Cav. Div, is planning on holding an "Alumni Day" on 12/11/08 at Fort Hood, TX. The plans call for a day of demonstrations and displays of the equipment in use today and observing a live fire excersize. This would be followed by a Battalion Ball and the chance to meet today's soldiers. We need to have an idea of how many vets are interested so if you would like to attend email me or visit our web site at www.lzhurricane.com.

I am sorry to say that Jack Morton has passed away. I received a phone call from his son-in-law earlier today. Since I need to travel out of state tomorrow, I wanted to send out this hurried note. Jack was very proud of being a member of the Americal Division, 182nd Infantry, Company G, 2nd Platoon, and all of his war service. He served in New Caledonia, Fiji, Bougainville, Leyte, Cebu, and Yokahama during WWII. He was especially proud of being a member of Roy's Raiders, under Lt Richard Roy, on Bougainville, and for later receiving a Battlefield Commission to rise to officer level. I first contacted Jack in an effort to learn about my father's WWII activities. Jack recounted many of the events their platoon went through for me. I was able to assist Jack to post his service to the National WWII Registry, along with a fine picture of Jack on Bougainville, shown below, but better viewed at the site address shown. See Jack Morton http://www.wwiimemorial.com/registry/search/pframe.asp?HonoreeID=1626925&popcount=3&tcount=5.
He also is in the Roy's Raiders photo at Richard Roy: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/registry/search/pframe.asp?HonoreeID=1626919&popcount=4&tcount=12 Both pictures can be better viewed and enlarged by clicking on the picture at the National WWII Memorial Registry site shown. I spoke to Jack recently as he called to thank me profusely for sending him a little vial full of sand retrieved from Bougainville by my daughters friend. Jack knew that his days were numbered, but vowed to fight for as much as he could get.

Just a heads up to everyone. I made the mistake of buying the "TIME LIFE Books" dvds on Vietnam. They claim that they are "unbiased"; but in my opinion, it is some of the worst anti-veteran filth that I've seen in the past forty years! I strongly recommend avoiding it.
I was in E 2/1 Mortars and Recon, and C 2/1 COs driver, from Aug 71 thru Apr 72, 196th LIB (Americal Div until approx Dec 1971 when the division furled their colors at Chu Lai). We were in Danang, Chu Lai, and Phu Bai during that time. That was my third tour. The first was with 1/8 Inf, 4th ID (Dak To to An Khe), and the second started with C Co 52d Inf and ended with C Co 720th MP Bn escorting convoys in V100 armored cars (based from Saigon to Lai Khe, and driving everywhere).

I am the Photo Editor for Vietnam magazine and am looking for images of Task Force Oregon, timeframe about August 1967 and the battle of An Ba. Any good, strong images of the Americal Division or anything to do with Task Force Oregon in the battle or in Chu Lai would be very helpful. Please contact me if you think you may have some images that we could use in the magazine. They must be good quality, preferably color shots that show action or something involving the above mentioned subjects.

I am making plans for a September or October 2009 visit to the places in the Pacific where my father served in World War II. My father, Hyman Trusten of Woburn, Massachusetts (88 years old, very much alive and doing well!) served in the Message Center with the 26th Signal Company that came from Boston. I am studying the book Under The Southern Cross, so I have the overall account of events, but the personal facts are missing. So, as part of my preparation for the journey, I talked with my Dad this morning to try and find out exactly where he was on each of the islands of his Pacific service, which lasted from January 1942 to August 1945 (he enlisted on 16 January 1941 and was discharged on 1 September 1945; he is on the right in the attached black-and-white photo; his brother Sam, my uncle, veteran of 30 missions over Germany, is on the left, date of photo is September 1945; my uncle Sam is also still alive and well, in Arizona). He has a hard time remembering the important details, but from what we pieced together this morning, he was at the following:
1) Melbourne, Australia (I visited this city in March 2007 and went to Royal Park where TF 6814 was camped--see photo! A lady at one of the tram ticket agencies was old enough to remember. Her mother told her to stay away from the soldiers in the park [grin])
2) New Caledonia This was before his getting accepted into Message Center work; he was laying wire, exhausting and boring; doesn't remember where he was.
3)Guadalcanal He recalls that the Message Center was near Henderson Field. Do you know exactly where? (Today, Henderson Field is the major airport on the island)
4)Fiji This was more of a rest period, but still at the Message Center. He doesn't remember where. Do you?
5) Bougainville What part of the island, he can't remember. He does remember being in the mess tent and having someone ask him how long he had been there. He couldn't even tell them then; he lost track of time.
5)Philippines This was the only time the entire Division landed together, at Cebu. He says he recalls going "up the chain," but can't remember where. He had been there so long that he was rotated home. When his ship home stopped at Pearl Harbor for supplies, word came of the atomic bombing of Japan, and the war ended.
My Dad and I have talked about his WWII service often, and for many years, but this time I tried to pin him down as to just where he was, and he just can't remember. Thank you in advance for any information that will help me fill in the gaps. God bless all of the generations of the Americal, and God bless America!

I am a nephew of Floyd J.M. Garman, who served with the Americal Divison, 132nd Infantry, Charlie company and was a scout for that unit in WW II. On 28 May 2008, my Uncle Floyd passed away at his home in Independence, Kansas. He told me he was called "Kansas" by some of the men in his unit. I am currently searching for anyone who might have served with my uncle and or know of a story handed down by a WW II Veteran. Anyone who might know of my Uncle Floyd, please contact me at charlesigarman@yahoo.com. Since Uncle Floyd has no surviving children, it would be great to hear from anyone out there who might be able to tell us more of our uncle's military service. Respectfully,

Hello! First off I want to thank you for serving my country. God bless you all! I am the grand niece of Mrs. E. Yarnell. She is of the ship family and she Christened the Yarnell. I have several pictures (nice size too) that I think she go to her other family-those who served on her. Can I email them to you? I have a Nice one of Auntie Christening the Yarnell, one of just the ship and one of Auntie standing next to her. I do hope someone will send me a reply. As a first hand relative I think it's awful that they should scrap her. She's my family too. God bless! God bless us all in the Land of the Free! Because of the very BRAVE!!!

I just want to say thanks to the people that helped me find out information about the death of Sgt Ronald G. Dennis. He was killed on December 24th 1969 in Quang Ngai Province He was a member of CoA 4/3 11th LTB. With the help of a wonder lady in Texas named Kitty and members of Ronnie's platoon. Namely Clyde Collins and Peter Dempsey. Peter and Clyde supplied me with the events of the day that Ronnie died. Ronnie and I grew up on the same block and were very close for many years. I was in country when he was killed and did learn of his death until March of 1970. Again,I want thank these people for all their help.

I have some really hard-to-read documents I received from the National Personnel Records Center in Missouri regarding my dad, Robert N. "Bob" Smith - also called "Smitty" by his buddies in Biggs, California. He was born on December 11, 1923, was 6'1", had brown hair and eyes, and weighed about 185 at the time of his discharge. His service number was 39 411 448. I will provide all the information I can read on these very BAD copies and perhaps someone out there can help me find out more about dad's service. I do know he was charged as a deserter and in jail for a while (my mom told me that much) - he would never talk about that - would get angry if I asked him about it. He's gone now, and I really would like to know the truth - hopefully, someone knew him or can point me in a direction where I can find out just what happened. He did ultimately receive an honorable discharge. Here are the details of the discharge form I was sent:
He was a private first class when discharged from the 11th Infantry Regiment on August 31, 1946 - at Camp Beale California
Date of induction: March 1, 1943 in Sacramento, CA
Military occupation - Truck Driver Heavy 931
Military Qualification ??? Date - Combat Inf Badge Nov 44
Battles and Campaigns - Reineland (???), Central Europe, Go (???) 40 WD 45 (not sure if this is right - hard to read)
Decorations and Citations - American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Vicotry Medal
Highest Grade Held - CPL
Service Outside Continental U. S. And Return - Date of Departure - 22 AUG 44, Destination - E A M ET ????, Date of Arrival - 3 SEP 44
24 FEB 45 US 9 MAR 45
????????? Statement for Separation - Convenience of the Government RR 1 1 Demobilization AR 613 365 (hard to read)
Can't make out most of the rest of the form - but I think it's mostly pay info so not important to my cause. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

To All of Those of "The Americal Division" & From All of Those Who Served With; The 173rd AIRBORNE BRIGADE - I (we) would like to say...
"Welcome Home, Brother - Welcome Back. We've Been Waiting For You".
I am seeking information, tips, and any suggestions from any Viet Nam Vets who had made a Return Trip to the RVN that we all remember. Even more so from any of you who chose NOT to use an organized tour company, and chose to go it alone. Please be prepared to correspond often and in detail in regard to the requested information. A former platoon Brother from "The Herd" and myself are planning to make our Return Journey back this coming November (08) and we are curious if doing so is possible and/or a good idea NOT to use an organized Tour Company, thus allowing more freedom to go where we choose.
***We crossed paths a few times out in the Boonies with you guys of the Americal, and used your Fire Support Services often. It was nice to know that we weren't always "out there". Thanks once again, guys. And, we hope you all have found your Peace.....From a couple of guys at The 173rd Airborne Brigade - "The Herd".

First of all I want to thank all you great men and women for your service to this great nation! My name is Staff Sergeant Robert Douglas I am an Infantryman in the United States Army, I am 26 years old and am from NE Tennessee. I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran and a brother to you all. I am on a mission that I know will be a challenging one. My grandfather (who is my hero) was a veteran of the great Americal Division (132nd to be exact). His Battalion and Company are unknown to me. What I do know is that he served in Guadalcanal during the offensive between November 1942 and feburary 1943. He fought in the area of Mt. Austen and was given a battle field commission. His name was LTC Wayne M. Douglas (USA Ret.) He was a Sgt. At the start of the campaign, and by the end of it he was a LT. I am looking for anyone who may have served with him, or knew of him. I am trying to find as much information as possible. For those of you who served with the Americal in Guadalcanal, or those of you that had a family member that served there, there is a great book by the name of "Orchids in the Mud". Thank you all and God Bless!

Hi. I just finished looking at the Americal sites in Vietnam website and found a tremendous amount of great information. Although I wasn't assigned to Americal in any way, I am sure that I have at one time or another supported some of you. I was at Tam Ky (68-69)at the FOL of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. We controlled the FACs that were instrumental in saving your bacon on occasion! Anyway, I am not eligible to join your organization but still wanted to say "Welcome home" and thank you all for your service to our great nation. Any communications from any of you that were in the Tam Ky area are welcome! Our call sign was Jake so some of you may remember that.

Hello. My great Uncle Doeke DeBoer was a (private, promoted to Sgt.) BAR gunner in the Americal Division from Oct. '42- Oct. '45. He was from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a member of Comstock VFW Post #6252. Unfortunately we do not know his exact until yet. He passed away a few years ago, and there are no living members who know his history. I have been trying to piece things together with my Dad. We have a few newspaper clippings that mention forming in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, a place called Hill 260, Nip Gap, a headline stating helping kill 17 and destroying 7 pillboxes, a Sgt. George Oliver, etc. If anyone remembers him, or can help with ways to research hist past, I would appreciate it. The fire at the archives we are told destroyed his records. Thanks.

Okay, here I go again. January 2008 will be 40 years since a bunch of you were in heavy action and KIAs & WIAs were very high. Most of you know C 2/1 was very special to me, I am trying to organize a "thing" at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on January 5 or 6 (not sure which yet, still planning) to remember the 19 men who were KIA on 5-6 January 1968. I am trying to obtain pictures of all 19 and hopefully find a family member, friend, x-GI buddy that would be willing to write something to be read during the rememberance program. If there is anyone out there who remembers these guys and would like to share something please contact me. Anyone in the area or might be who would like to stop by I'll post the exact date and time as soon as I can pin it down. I hope all of you, your families and friends have a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I would just like to inform the members of the Americal that my Dad, Kenneth Trombley passed away this past week at the young age of 89 years. He was a very proud veteran and was much honored to be a part of the Americal. For any of you that were fortunate enough to have met my dad at many reunions, he was a proud soldier and a very proud American. He served 42 months in the South Pacific with the 221st Field Artillery. He was buried at Mass National Cemetery in Bourne with full military honors, which was very emotional for me. I was so proud to accept the flag that he so valiantly fought to protect. He was definitely a part of the Greatest Generation. Please remember my father. Thanks and God Bless

As an Americal WW2 Vet time is running out. Some 900 of us are dying every day. I served the final few months of the war on Cebu with 132nd Inf. 1st Bn. D. Co. Mach. gun Platoon. I am searching for my squad Leader, Gene Tucker from Texas. The only other name I an remember is another unit grunt named Granger, no 1st name, but think he was from Chicago. I received
3 mortar wounds, was treated in the field and sent back to duty. A few weeks later our company commander, name unknown lined
myself and 3 other men up to present us each a Purple Heart. The wierd part was after he pinned the heart on, he took it off, went to the next man and did it allover again, when all had been pinned the Heart went in his pocket. There was apparently no official record noted of my wunds or the Heart presentation. I need to find TUCKER OR ANYONE ELSE who might remember the incident. Want no praise or publicity, would just like to have themedal...I know they can be purchased but that's not what I want. If it never happens--so be it, maybe I'll be reincarnated and in my next life be in another war and wounded (for the record.) Thanks to all you guys for your bit and those who are doing theirs now and 'GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.

I am sending this message for my brother Phillip Martin who was with Company E, 5th battalion 46th Infantry from June 1969 thru May 1970. He is needing any information concerning major battles such as South of Chu Lai airport where a Medicap crashed and many other horrible unspeakable things happened. He is under medical care with the VA for different medical problems. In order for the VA to continue to help him further, he needs more details concerning dates and information on these battles. He has went thru his Representative but they were told that they could not release anything to them. It had something to do with protecting the deceased and living veterans. He really doesn't understand this, so this is why I have come to your website asking for help. You can contact me zeb@bluffsnet.com or sengelbr@ic.edu. Any information you can provide us would be most helpful.

The United States Postal Service has suddenly begun charging our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan full postage to mail letters home. Like we before, they had been able to do that free. Now, it seems their sacrifices in our name aren't worth a 41 cent stamp. Please contact your Congressional representatives and stop this right now!

I am the daughter of Ellis E. Perdue (nickname Eddie) who served in the 132nd Battalion, Americal, I believe in Leyte and then served on or with the Intelligence Division with General MacArthur and possibly General Thorpe??? My father just recently passed away and I found all these notes and papers and etc from the time he was overseas. He always talked about being shot in the war and receiving the Purple Heart but we have never found it and his DD214 was a mess. Being a veteran of 24 years active duty, I know how important the DD214 is and I am sure that many of the men did not check their form to make sure it was correct. My Dad has wonderful pictures from the war of Tokyo when he worked there. I have names of men that I will add as I can get the list from my mother. When we tried to get information about his being shot (there is a wound on his back) we, of course, are told that the records were burned so he has never been able to be service connected though he did pass away in the veterans hospital here in Salem, VA.
I would like to know if there is anyone who might have remembered him or knew about him getting shot. I will get the list from my mom which also shows I believe a hospital where he was recuperating. I wish I could have gotten more information while he was living – I tried. Thanks for any and all help.

I am searching for John Wolford, because according to his post a few years ago, he was in a crash in Chu Lai of a C123, 1968. It was at the end of a runway. I was on Fire & Rescue Crash Crew, and was the first one there. A chopper flew overhead to keep the flames down. It was allegedly bad gas in the craft that took it down. Almost everyone died- I had never known if anyone survived- but would love to speak to someone who did. I tried like hell to save everyone I could. I really want to make contact with Mr. Wolford or anyone who was there. His email address listed on his post is no longer valid. Does anyone know how I can reach him? Was anyone there that knows about the crash I'm talking about? Please respond to my personal email.

WANTED: Vietnam vets to do brief radio station ID spots on the "numbah one" tribute radio station on the internet for music and spoken word from the Vietnam era - Radio Vietnam! All you need is the ability to record a 10 - 20 second WAV or MP3 file on your computer, giving your name (or alias of your choice), unit that you served with, and a mention of Radio Vietnam (like, “you’re listening to Radio Vietnam”). You email it to us and we take care of the rest - including editing and musical background! No professional experience necessary - and, of course, just like the station, this is all voluntary and non-profit. It's easy and fun! My 6/13 post is already outdated. I was trying to figure whether on that day in the river with A/4/21, we might have killed Dang Thuy Tram, an NVA doc who was killed in that area, and who has recently become famous for her diary. Carl Zarzyski (B4/21) contacted me right away with information that strongly suggests that it was another 4/21 company. It seems that several of you guys know a lot more about this than I do. I'm relieved, and the matter is closed for me.

My name is Tom Birdsong, and I was checking your casuality list by units looking for the name of David Wooden.
David and I went thru AIT at Ft Polk together and became very good friends. Upon completion of AIT, David had
orders to to report to Travis AFB , and Vietnam. It turns out that he was assigned to the 196th light infantry, and
KIA on Nov. 27th 1967. I reported to Ft. Lewis Washington after AIT, and ended up going to Nam of a troop carrier. I went to the 3rd brigade of the 25th infantry, and worked a lot of the same areas as you fellows in the highlands.
Our company, A co. 1/35th infantry, was also in a fire fight on Nov. 27, 1967, and we lost quite a few guys.
I went to Davids hometown in Mo. several years ago and met his family, and I also visited his gravesite. I still miss him.

I was a scout-dog handler out of Duc Pho. My first mission was with A 4/21 (Capt. Franzon). We walked up a stream or small river most of one afternoon. It was cool and nice; my dog loved it. Somewhere up out of sight in the lead element (we weren't on point at the time), two NVA medics stumbled into our formation. You guys fired them up pretty good, killing one and severely wounding the other. The wounded one was medevac-ed as a POW. The dead one was left under a bush, and we moved on. If you were there, my question is this: Was there any chance that the dead one was female? If you can't guess what I'm driving at here, I'll tell you when you contact me.

Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out if I was ever listed as an MIA?
In February of 71, while serving wit E-company, 723rd Mt, I was put on a top secret convoy to go to the DMZ. Somehow they lost the list of drivers and when I returned to my unit, I didn't get any mail for weeks. When I asked the Red Cross what was going on, I was told that I had been reported M.I.A. and my Dad had also received a notification telling him I was officially listed as M.I.A. After letting the Red Cross know I was back my mail started back up again. Is there a way to find out if I was actually listed as M.I.A.?

I have enjoyed the Americal Division Alumni Association website. My Dad, Bob MacKay, was in the 26th Signal Company that arrived in New Caledonia in early 1942. He served with the Americal Division until his return to the U.S. and discharge in September 1945. My Dad was a company clerk in the 26th Signal Company and in July 1943, was transferred to division headquarters and HHC, Amercial Division. While in the 26th Signal Company, my Dad, among other things, was responsible for obtaining motion pictures and setting up and running the projector to show them to various elements of the division. He was the the Adjutant General's section of the division headquarters.
Among my Dad's papers, I found the picture below, which Dad's handwriting on the back indicates was taken on April 22, 1943 on the island of Viti Levu among the Fiji Islands. The 13 soldiers in the picture were all from Watertown, Massachusetts. They enlisted (I cannot explain LT Murphy's presence) in the 26th Signal Company, 26th Infantry Division (Yankee Division), Massachusetts National Guard, in 1940 in Charlestown, Massachusetts – which became part of the Americal Division in 1942. Each of the soldiers returned safely from the Pacific Theater of Operations after 3 ½ years overseas and four campaigns. I am not sure of the significance of the pen an inked "X" on some of the subjects of the photograph.

I am (sp/5) Don Schieber. I was in-country from Mar-70 to Mar-71. I was in Chu Lai till Jan-71, then went to Quang Tri till Mar-71. Processed out for stateside Mar-71 out of Chu Lai. I was in the Warlords, B Co. 123rd Avn Bn., till Oct-70, then transfered to the Blue Ghost, F/8 123rd Avn. Bn., till Mar-71. I was stateside when the Dinks hit Quang Tri hard and hit the main ammo dump, blowing it up. They also hit the hootch that I had been in, killing many good men and friends. Duke Frailey wrote me and told me the sad news. Although, many years have passed, I still remember their faces. Good luck to all.

My name is Rudy Ogas, I am the olderst son of PFC Rito V. Ogas. My dad served with the 23rd Americal Div, 182nd Inf Regt, 3bn, Company G. I have been trying to find as much info on my Dad's participation during the Philippine campaigns. Thanks to this web site, I have been able to piece together some idea of where my Dad served. His records were destroyed in a fire at the St. Louis records center, I got some medical records from Camp Carson, CO, his discharge and the VA has replaced his ribbons and medals. If anyone has any information on my Dad or even knew him, please contact me at the following address. Thank you for your assistance, I am also retired Navy(Submarines), 1960-1979.

My father was John E. Blizzard, a WWII veteran who died in 1992. According to separation papers, he was assigned to Company C of the 61st Infantry (replacement unit) out of Camp Wolters, Texas. Dad was a squad leader (60 MM Mortar) and served from September 1943 to May 1945. He was involved in the Naples-Foggia, Rome-Armo, Southern France, and Rhineland campaigns, and I believe also served earlier in North Africa. Dad became a prisoner of war who I believe was liberated in Germany by the Russians. I wish I had more information, but Dad didn't like to talk much about his experiences during WWII. If anyone served with him and has any information regarding his service, I would like to share it with my son, who sadly never knew his grandfather. Thank you.

My uncle, Horace W. Woodward, served with the original Americal Division from its inception until the end of WWII. He had joined the National Guard some time before the start of WWII, and on January 16, 1941 (the day I was born) he went into the regular army (he always rememberd by birthday as a result of that). My uncle's unit was originally in new Caledonia and later served at Guadalcanal. When I was a small girl 9 years of age Uncle showed me his service patches and his decorations. There was what seemed like a drawerful - among them was a special one from the Navy, of all things (he was Army!). I remember when he came home from the war -- I was about four or five years old and we all went to my grandparents for his homecoming. He was still sick when he came home, recently recovered from a bout with malaria (which continued to recur over several years). Before he was allowed to come home, Uncle had to go to Lake Placid NY for R&R - he said it was to become a civilian again (too bad they didnt do that for the guys who went to Vietnam!). While at Lake Placid one of the nurses there introduced him to her sister. This sister later became his wife, my aunt.
Uncle Dorce died of cancer about four years ago. His only child, a daughter, and I stay in touch via Internet and telephone. Our family has always been proud of Uncle "Dorce" for his service in the Americal Division.
I need to mention one other name here. An old family friend who also served in the Americal during WWII. His name was John J. Lavie, Jr., and he was a medical corpsman. He went on to attend Boston University on the GI Bill, took both a bachelors and a masters there and then worked for the government until he retired. John never married. He was a good friend of my parents, and often helped me with homework difficulties. A smart and interesting gentleman was John.

Greetings to all veterans of the Americal Division from throughout its lineage. My Dad, Hyman Trusten of 5 Canterbury Road, Woburn, Massachusetts, age 86 and alive and very well, served with the 26th Signal Company, beginning as Task Force 6814, from February 1942 to July 1945. I will be visiting Australia for the first time from 17 to 31 March 2007. The final leg of my journey will be in Melbourne, site of the first stop of Task Force 6814. This may be a needle-in-a-haystack situation, but I am trying to discover three facts before I go:
1. The name of the converted ocean liner that the 26th Signal company was on (I understand that there were seven liners)
2. The location in Melbourne where the 26th Signal company landed
3. The location in the Melbourne area where the 26th Signal company was camped
I've tried to learn these from my Dad, but through all the turmoil at the time, and also the passage of 65 years, he can't remember. Can any of you? If you can, please write to me at trusten@grandecom.net
I posted to this guestbook years ago, but I see that it had to be restored. So, please let me take this opportunity to thank all of you, from the bottom of my heart, for your service to our country. There would be no America if it wasn't for you.

Hi, I am the son of Marvin Adolph Grewatz of the 164th infantry. Dad was in the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal as a
staff sergeant. AS I was growing up I remember him telling me stories of a Japanese pilot downed in a lagoon, and walking
with his men on patrol. Dad stepped on a land mine and he remembers solders diving out his belongings because he wasn't
suppose to make it. He talked about a throwing knife, and other belongings. He said they dug him into the ground and places
some dirt over branches to hide him until he could be evocate to a hospital. He said it was a boat off shore that he was moved
to eventually. He remembers a little worm throwing dirt into his only good eye and he couldn't do anything to stop it. He was
always mad at the little worm. As was growing up sitting on his lap I put my fingers on the scars of the shrapnel that was still in
his body. It was in his head, arms, legs that I know about. The story picks up in a hospital in California; He was well enof to
walk around the hospital so he went up to the director of the hospital to ask when he would be able to leave. They asked who
he was because they have no record of him being there. He was sent to Kansas and his discharge paper has reason, poor
health. He was stitched up from the land mine. I did come upon pictures of a few experiences he had in the Solomon Islands
with a few solders in the tropics. I guess my question is did anyone know him? I am attempting to get him a purple hart but
there are no records except a letter from mom, a discharge paper, and his medical records with x rays with doctors notes of
small shrapnel in the x ray when ever he went in for medical reasons; i.e. broken leg, sinus problems, pulps of the nose, head
x-ray ? A local Vet office told me I could order one up but it takes a lot of work to make it official and I probably wouldn’t
get it so I get discouraged and stop the effort. Dad was from Edgly, North Dakota Thane M. Grewatz 3226 County Road

I was an Artillery FO that once substituted for an FO assigned to one of the maneuver companies of the 1/52, 198TH LIB sometime between 2/70 and 5/70. All I remember of the unit is that it was a company whose regular FO that I was filling in for was later killed in a helicopter crash. His first name was Kenneth (like mine), I believe. While with that unit, our perimeter came first under sniper fire and then an assault of some kind. Elements of the company were also outside the perimeter on patrol when it happened. I and the regular FO's RTO and Recon Sgt. ran to the top of a small hill within our perimeter so we could have a better view and adjust artillery fire as needed. On top of the hill was a 106 Recoilless rifle and its crew, which fired 2 or 3 times while we were up there. Our FO team was pressed up against the sandbag barrier that surrounded the gun and we remained there until we were able to raise a 155 Howitzer battery on the radio, call in and adjust a fire mission. My recollection of that incident was that the company suffered 4 WIA and no KIA, and that while we were on the hill, mortar rounds or grenades (don't know which) were impacting around us and it seemed they were being "walked" up to the top of the hill where we were all located. Our team was sprayed with dirt and whatever else a few times, and because of our position in relation to the back of the gun, we couldn’t see how the showers could have been from the 106 firing. Whatever was going on, I was convinced we were in grave and imminent danger and while hunkering down immediately after one loud bang and shower of debris that seemed even closer than the previous ones, I had one of those experiences where your life flashes before you in an instant. We hung in there and after completing our task, I remember yelling to my two teammates that we should now "Get the hell out of here.", whereupon we ran back down the hill. The gun crew had already by then left. I am trying to find the RTO and Recon Sgt. that I was with, or anyone, infantry or otherwise, that might remember this event. I don’t remember their names, but I do remember that for whatever reason one of my temporary teammates was having one heck of a feud with the Infantry Company Commander; over what, I never learned! The passing of the years has left me wondering how accurate my memory is.

My father,Harold Alonzo Kennedy, was in WWII 1944-1945 in the Philippines w/ the 132nd Inf Regt. I've tried to get information on his personnel and medical records, but they were destroyed in the St.Louis fire in 1973. If someone could direct me to where I could find out more I would greatly appreciate it. I know he was wounded in Cebu Philippines Apr 2 1945.I also know his place of entry into service was Ft. Hi my name is Julie Gauld. I am the daughter of Army Sgt Bob Mussin. My father went to his basic traning in fort benning Ga, his tour of service began on jan 21, 1970. his length of service was 1 year. he was in the 11th light infantry brigade. he was born on jan 06 1945. he was from detroit michigan. he was killed on april 15th 1970. in Quang Ngai south vietnam on hostile ground. he was my father I never had the chance to know him. my mom and him were suppose to be married when he got back from the war. but he never made it back. I have tried so many different sites. I want to know what kind of person he was.
My mom still cant talk about him. my mom and my father werent married so they kept me the "Secret" until he got back. not even their parents knew of me. I am the only daughter of a vietnam hero my fathers parents never got the chance to know me my grandma on my moms side knew me. but didn’t know who my father was. when my mom finally told me about my father a few years ago. that the man I grew up with was my step father it was a shock to me, so since then I have been trying to find anybody who knew the man my father?
My mom did tell me that the days grew into weeks the weeks became months then the months to years she said it began so hard to remember my father because it hurt so bad. she keeps the memory of my father deep in her heart I was 6 months old when he died. I know a simple question like did he talk about me his daughter ? I often wonder what was he like ? what did he talk about ?. I hope somebody can help me learn of my father. this is what I wish he could said to me. he did hold me my mom said he dressed me. well im just dragging this on and on. if anybody wants to email me my email address is oneswiftgal@msn.com and oneswiftgal@yahoo.com
